The family-owned company Intercad specializes in ship design, ship structures, and their overall design solutions. It was founded by Roland Matušek and Róbert Gelle, who originally worked for a local shipyard in Slovakia. As the number of projects grew, the company implemented FLOWii CRM to manage contracts and projects more efficiently.

How did the story of your company begin?

Our company focuses on ship design, engineering, and construction, including interior design. Originally, Róbert and I worked at a Slovak shipyard in Komárno. When it went bankrupt, we began looking for new opportunities to pursue our professional ambitions.

We wanted to focus on what we do best. We were participating on some projects as designers in the Netherlands and Germany. Eventually, we brought our projects back to Slovakia and founded our own company.

Today, our team consists of 32 people, including excellent designers and engineers. We have even established a branch office in the Netherlands.

Does that mean you do not build ships, but only design them?

We are what you might call ship architects. We prepare design concepts and technical documentation, and in some cases we also design the interiors and exteriors of vessels. It depends on the specific project. In the past, everything was done manually; today, we use advanced technologies and specialized software.

Over the years, we have designed various types of vessels – large seagoing ships, sections of massive cruise liners, and 100-meter river ships. Currently, we are also working on yacht designs. Most of our clients are international. We have completed projects for clients from the United States, Spain, Poland, and Germany, and we are currently handling many projects for the Netherlands.

Are you still personally involved in ship design?

Today, I am primarily responsible for managing the company.

Ship design is a beautiful profession, and I have always enjoyed it. Although it is technically oriented, it also allows for creativity and innovation. Many times, I would sit down to draw and not even notice how quickly time passed.

Managing the company is fulfilling as well. It sometimes requires traveling, but I am able to balance it with my personal life.

What does the implementation of a ship project look like? Do you design ships based on a client’s specifications?

Designing a ship is a great responsibility. In this type of work, every detail matters, and all calculations must be precise. In most cases, we build on the design of an older or similar vessel that we have already worked on. The client describes the requirements their ship must meet, and we design it accordingly.

Sometimes we are commissioned to work on just a specific part of a vessel, such as preparing technical documentation for the steel structure, engines, or piping systems. Other times, we focus on exterior cladding and the overall design of the ship’s outer structure.

Thanks to our experience, we are also capable of designing an entire ship from concept to completion.

How do you use FLOWii for project work and online project management?

We work with two types of clients. For one group, we charge on an hourly basis and report the number of hours worked on the project every week. With the other group, we agree in advance on a fixed number of hours allocated to the project and strictly adhere to that limit.

Previously, we recorded this data manually in Excel, which was both time-consuming and inaccurate. We therefore looked for software that could accurately track how much time our team spends on specific tasks or projects.

We found FLOWii, which, through its task planner, allows us to measure time spent on individual projects and assignments. This has been a significant help.

In FLOWii, each project is registered as a contract divided into smaller work tasks. The online system enables us to monitor how many hours our employees spend on each project. Based on this data, we can allocate workloads more effectively and prepare detailed reports when needed.

How do you use other FLOWii solutions in your business?

In addition to project management, we also use several other FLOWii features:

  • Online invoicing – we send invoices directly via email, which significantly simplifies and speeds up our administrative processes.
  • CRM system – for managing and updating our client contacts efficiently.
  • Contract and job management – which helps streamline our project management and keeps our workflows well organized.

What interesting projects have you worked on?

We have worked on two large yacht projects. The client provided us with advanced design drawings, based on which we prepared the technical documentation. In the past, we have also been involved in projects for cruise ships and large seagoing vessels that operate on open seas.

What makes your business unique?

We strive to maintain a family-oriented approach and, above all, remain human in everything we do. There is hardly any project we would refuse. We have a clear vision and consistently work toward fulfilling it.

We originally started with the design of steel ship structures and container-type vessels, and today we are working on yacht projects. Each project brings new challenges. It is always rewarding to be invited to the official launch of a vessel we helped design.

In the future, we would like to design our own ships — from complete concept and full technical documentation to delivering the finished design to the client. After years of experience, we feel confident and prepared to design an entire vessel from start to finish.
